Naturopathic Medicine 101

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary healthcare that blends modern medical science with traditional natural therapeutics. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) complete a rigorous, 4-year accredited post-graduate medical program where they are trained as primary care physicians. They are currently licensed to practice in 26 U.S. states and territories. Washington State offers one of the broadest ND scopes in the nation—including broad prescriptive rites, minor surgery, and full primary care privileges.

Naturopathic medicine is defined by six core principles:

  • First, Do No Harm: Utilizing the most natural, least invasive therapies first.

  • The Healing Power of Nature: Supporting the body’s innate, self-healing mechanism.

  • Identify and Treat the Cause: Looking beyond surface symptoms to resolve underlying imbalances.

  • Doctor as Teacher: Educating, empowering, and encouraging self-responsibility in health.

  • Treat the Whole Person: Accounting for physical, mental, emotional, environmental, and spiritual factors.

  • Prevention: Emphasizing wellness and disease prevention before illness arises.

ND vs. MD vs. Health Coach

While MDs, NDs, and Health Coaches all play valuable roles in healthcare, their training, scope, and approach differ significantly:

  • ND vs. MD: Like MDs, NDs undergo 4 years of graduate medical school, accumulating over 4,000 hours of academic instruction and 1,200+ hours of supervised clinical training in diagnostics, pharmacology, and minor office procedures. NDs are educated in all of the same basic sciences as an MD but also receive extensive doctoral-level training in clinical nutrition, physical medicine, lifestyle counseling, and hundreds of dedicated hours in botanical medicine—areas minimally covered in standard MD programs. NDs excel at investigating chronic, complex health concerns from a root-cause perspective, with an emphasis on disease prevention and nontoxic approaches to wellness.

  • ND vs. Health Coach: Health coaches generally complete short certificate courses (weeks to months) focusing on accountability and general wellness habits. They cannot diagnose conditions, interpret medical labs, or design clinical interventions. An ND holds a doctorate, possesses deep biomedical and clinical expertise, and provides rigorous, evidence-based health guidance rooted in human physiology and pathology.

For anyone seeking deep, root-cause health strategy, an ND offers the safety, rigor, and clinical foundation of medical training combined with the holistic vision of natural medicine.

Specialized Care

Because our consultations are provided exclusively virtually via telemedicine, we do not act as your primary care provider. We require all clients to maintain an established relationship with an in-person primary care physician or local medical team for urgent needs, routine physical exams, emergencies, and standard physical screenings. We warmly welcome collaborative care and are always happy to work alongside your existing doctors and specialists.

Patient vs. Client

Because state licensing laws for naturopathic medicine vary across the country, your designation depends on where you live. If you reside in a state where naturopathic doctors are licensed medical providers (such as Washington), you may be seen as a patient receiving direct clinical care. If you reside in a non-licensed state, we work together in a health consulting capacity as a client, focusing on in-depth education, functional health analysis, and lifestyle guidance to support your well-being.

Regardless of your designation, every single person receives the same compassionate, root-cause depth of care and individual attention. The best way to clarify how our services align with your location and personal health goals is to book a free 15-minute Discovery Call—we will walk through your options and ensure you feel completely supported before moving forward!

Patient Population

While our primary clinical focus and community center around women navigating nervous system health, gut balance, and vitality, all individuals are warmly welcome. We support people of all gender identities, backgrounds, and walks of life who are seeking a thoughtful, root-cause approach to health. If you are eager to understand your biology and take an active role in your wellness, you will find a supportive home here.

Duration of Care Expectations

Healing is a process, not a quick fix. Because root-cause care focuses on restoring balance to whole body systems rather than masking symptoms, your timeline depends on your unique health history, system complexity, and consistency. Many clients report subtle shifts—like improved energy, clearer focus, or better digestion—within the first 2 to 4 weeks. However, sustainable biological change (such as hormone balancing or gut repair) typically unfolds over 3 to 6 months of steady support.

Our goal is patient empowerment, not a lifetime subscription. Many conventional care models are designed as a revolving door, requiring frequent, ongoing visits to manage recurring symptoms. Here, we take the opposite approach: we teach you how your body works so you can take true ownership of your health. As you gain clarity and your system stabilizes, your care naturally tapers off. Ultimately, our goal is to help you reach a place where you only need occasional check-ins or annual tune-ups to maintain your vitality.

Discovery Call vs. Initial Consultation

A Discovery Call is a complimentary 15-minute conversation designed to help us determine if our practice is the right fit for your goals. It is an unhurried space to ask logistical questions, clarify whether you will be seen as a patient or client, and discuss our working structure—it does not include medical advice or health protocols.

An Initial Consultation is our deep dive together (60–90 minutes), where we conduct a thorough health history review, examine root causes, and build your actual personalized care strategy.

After our first session

You leave with a clear, structured path forward. Following your initial session, we synthesize your health history and functional goals into a personalized Wellness Roadmap. This outlines tailored nutrition strategies, lifestyle and stress-regulation protocols, and any recommended functional labs. We will schedule follow-up sessions (typically every 3 to 6 weeks) to review lab results, track progress, fine-tune your plan, and support you as your body adapts.

Functional Testing Information

Functional testing is always recommended when pertinent, but it is never strictly required.

  • Why We Recommend Testing: Functional testing (such as comprehensive gut analysis, hormone mapping, or nutrient panels) gives us a clear window into your unique physiology. Having objective data allows us to build a highly targeted plan right away—often saving you time and money by reducing the trial-and-error period and reducing the total number of follow-up visits needed over time.

  • Cost & Financial Transparency: Functional lab costs are paid out of pocket directly by the client to the lab company. Our practice makes $0 from functional testing and receives no markups or commissions. Costs vary depending on the specific panel, typically ranging from $150 to $450 per test.

  • Our Compassionate Approach: We recognize that functional testing is a financial investment. If testing is not within your budget right now, we will absolutely still work with you. We can achieve remarkable progress using detailed health histories, body symptom tracking, food-first nutrition, and targeted lifestyle practices to support your healing journey.

Wellness Budget Philosophy

No. Our primary philosophy is food-first, lifestyle-centered care. While targeted, high-quality botanical or nutritional supplements can provide therapeutic momentum during active healing phases, they are never intended to replace a solid foundation of real food, restful sleep, and nervous system regulation. When supplements are recommended, we prioritize minimal, highly effective formulas, and we respect your personal budget preferences.

Collaborative Care

Yes, absolutely. We warmly welcome collaborative care. We analyze how natural therapies, food-first interventions, and lifestyle changes interact with pharmaceutical medications to ensure complete safety and synergy. We encourage you to maintain your relationship with your conventional care team, and we are always happy to share records or collaborate directly with your doctors upon request.

Billing Information

We do not bill insurance directly at this time, and sessions are self-pay. However, regulations around telehealth and naturopathic insurance coverage are rapidly evolving.

For Washington State residents, insurance coverage options may change in the near future, so please check back periodically or reach out directly for current updates.

HSA & FSA Options

Yes! In most cases, HSA and FSA cards can be used to pay for educational health consultations, personalized wellness strategies, and functional health guidance.

Because HSA/FSA plan administrators have varying rules, we recommend checking with your specific provider to confirm coverage. Upon request, we are happy to provide an itemized receipt (superbill) after your session that you can submit to your HSA/FSA administrator for documentation or reimbursement.

Payment Plans & Scholarships

Yes. We believe that deep, root-cause health education and guidance should be accessible, and we are committed to meeting you where you are.

  • Payment Plans: Flexible, multi-payment options are available for all of our multi-session consultation packages. You can select a payment structure during checkout or discuss a customized schedule during your intake.

  • Scholarships: To support individuals experiencing significant financial hardship or health equity barriers, we offer a very limited number of partial and full scholarships each calendar year.

Scholarship applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. If you would like to be considered for an upcoming scholarship spot or need to arrange a payment plan tailored to your budget, please apply during your free Discovery Call or send us a brief note through our contact page.

Clinic Policies

Because clinical time is reserved exclusively for your care, we require at least 48 business hours' notice for any appointment cancellations or rescheduling requests. Late cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice will incur a fee equal to 50% of the scheduled session, while same-day cancellations or missed appointments (no-shows) are billed at the full session amount.

To help you stay on track, our system automatically sends email and text reminders 72 and 48 hours before your visit, giving you ample time to adjust your schedule if needed.

We completely understand that true emergencies and sudden illnesses arise—if an unexpected situation occurs, please reach out to us as soon as possible so we can work with you.
